Holy Cross Hospital Patient Tower Addition/Renovation

This multi-million-dollar, 45,500 SQM addition provided Holy Cross Hospital with much needed additional capacity and spanned over an existing access road on the campus. The project also included renovation of the existing 11,150 SQM hospital for new escalators, a pedestrian bridge to the new tower, and comprehensive MEP upgrades. The entire project achieved LEED Silver certification.

The new patient tower is a fully grouted post-tensioned concrete system laterally supported with cast-in-place concrete shear walls. It is designed to resist seismic forces based on a building occupancy category of IV and an importance factor of 1.5 in one direction, and wind loading in the other direction. The structure itself comprises a single basement level with eight floors above and an additional two-story penthouse. The penthouse roof and penthouse mezzanine are constructed of steel framing and supported laterally by steel cross bracing.

This project has also garnered the following awards: AIA Potomac Valley Award for Excellence in Institutional Architecture; Illuminating Engineering Society, Detroit Section Illumination Section Award; Illuminating Engineering Society, National Illumination Award of Merit; and Montgomery County Planning Department Design Excellence Award.
